MONDAY TRAVELS: THE ROYAL PHYSICIAN'S VISIT by Per Olov Enquist

Happy Monday friends! I hope you packed light and got some warm clothes cause:

Today we are in SWEDEN and DENMARK and we will explore:

THE ROYAL PHYSICIAN'S VISIT

Swedish writer Per Olov Enquist:
Per Olov Enquist, better known as P. O. Enquist, (23 September 1934) is a Swedish author. He has worked as a journalist, playwright, and novelist. In the 1990s, he gained international recognition with his novel The Visit of the Royal Physician. Enquist won the Nordic Council's Literature Prize in 1968 for his account of Sweden's deportation of Baltic-country soldiers at the end of the second world war. Subsequent awards have included the Selma Lagerlöf Prize in 1977, the Dobloug Prize in 1988, and the Italian the Flaiano Prize in 2002. At the 27th Guldbagge Awards Enquist was nominated for the award for Best Screenplay for the film Il Capitano: A Swedish Requiem.

Description:

Winner of top literary prizes in Sweden and France, Enquist's epic of power, love, and madness in 1760s Denmark is an extraordinarily elegant and gorgeous novel. Against the backdrop of political turbulence and the enlightenment in the second half of the 18th century, the narrative revolves around the court of the mentally ill King Christian VII of Denmark, and the romance between the king's physician, Johann Friedrich Struensee, and the queen, Caroline Mathilde. The novel won the August Prize and the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize.

Thoughts:

Even thought, the author is Swedish, the plot takes place in Denmark. I lived in Denmark for a year and I am very interested in reading this book!

I learned about the king Johann and queen Matilde in Danish classes and I thought that their story was very tragic and well just sad, since Johann was basically insane and Matilde was a strong woman with fire inside. So I cannot wait to get my hands on this book!

Have you read it? Let me know!

See you next Monday!
