EXPECTATIONS: Dracula books are my to-go when I feel down. That's because of what I said before, and likely more than once too: while I always dread they'll be bad, I always hope with all my heart that they will be good.
THE WORLD: The settings don't change much in these books. The way those settings are treated is what changes the most. Vlad's house, his beloved fortress in his homeland, gets bombed with napalm, leaving the place they thought as beautifully safe - a reminder, and a warning too.
CHARACTERS: During the said napalm bombing, which was no more than a ruse, Leila did her best to save as many people as she could. Something Szilagyi, a very old enemy, and a disgusting rats behind of a creature, hoped for. Leila gets kidnapped and promptly tortured both physically and morally. Szilagyi pushed wedges where he couldn't pull allies in Vlad's household, until he did finally found a turncoat. Result of that is he now believes he found a way to break the prince once and for all, with Leila. Little does he know, that the two of them, Leila and Vlad, are no ordinary people. These two believe in no limits. And they trust each other like no other. Vlad pours all his resources, pulls the strings, takes some favors, trusting Leila will do all it takes to survive until he finds her. And she, trusting he'd hope for just that, is clinging to life teeth and claws. In this instance it's Vlad's narrative that gets extremely good. As much as he doesn't really like Leila's family, either for being annoying, selfish, or just bad people in his eyes, he keeps them safe, and gets mighty angry when they sabotage their own safety. We get a glimpse to his past, a hint to how he was made what he is. And we meet someone from his own family, another member of the Basarab family branch, another Dracula.
ROMANCE: This was the most bloody beautiful love that I have ever seen. These two care for nothing than for the other to survive. Do whatever, but live. Cling to life no matter what, for if you survive today, you will survive tomorrow, and tomorrow might just be a better day.
GOOD: Vlad's character is so well written, I am beyond happy. He's a warlord, strong, unrelenting, and marching forwards not to win a war, but to save his people. That's the difference between a boss and a leader, and this fella here is one fine leader. I loved the glimpse into his past, as sparse as his words were. And I loved his snappy anger at those who mopped about. A life shouldn't be wasted, and in his eyes there's likely no greater evil than to throw it away.
BAD: I wished to know more of how Vlad was made. but that's all.
OVERALL: By all the damned gods, old and new, or whatever the hell else there is, this was so very good that it kicked me right out of my wallow-y mood. I love the survivors. I love those who choose life against all odds. May you all do just the same. I'd go smell the roses if there were any after this book.
